Are you a wait and see leader of your life?
Change is constant and we are always navigating uncertainty in our day to day life but, in this current time, the uncertainty feels much bigger. We are going through it on a global scale and it can be overwhelming to see and hear how this current pandemic is affecting everyone.
However, it is an opportunity for self-reflection and to understand whether you are living the life you want, at a more holistic level – both at work and home; a life with good health, wellbeing and joy.
Our daily patterns and habits have been interrupted and the disruption and the pause will certainly have surfaced those underlying niggles that we have been ignoring. The niggles that tell us we aren’t living the life we want, in the way we want it.
The long hours, the late nights, the exhaustion from working too hard, not being able to switch off, the boundaries you wish you were better at putting in place, the quality time you miss with your family (even in isolation), the quality time you never have for yourself, the confidence you wish you had to speak up and back yourself, the confidence to put yourself first and so much more.
The question is, will you do everything to continue to ignore the niggle? Or will you take the opportunity to confront what you know is not working for you and choose to do something that addresses it?
It’s easy to keep doing what we’ve always done but if you are not leveraging the opportunity of a global pandemic to reset and reinvent your life and your leadership of it, then when will you?
If you are unsure whether you are a wait and see leader have a look at the list below and see if you resonate with any of it:
1. Too busy
o You were always busy Pre C-19 and are still super busy now and barely have time to think.
I hate to break it to you, but time isn’t your issue – it’s a lack of priorities. The environment around us has changed radically, but if you haven’t - it’s time to pay attention to what’s really going on.
2. Not sure where to start
o You know that you want more for yourself but don’t know where to start.
It’s easy to say I don’t know where to start, but the truth is you know who you are and who you’d like to be. The gap is something you are familiar with – the question is, who do you need to enrol to help you close it?
3. Now’s not a good time
o You’ve got a lot on your plate and so many distractions – it’s not really the time to focus on you and your needs.
There’s the martyr, the one who always gives to others but never to herself. What secondary need is being met by over giving? Validation that you are needed? That you matter?
You do matter, so when will you treat yourself in a way that shows you that?
Taking the step to putting yourself first requires courage, it requires acknowledging that you have a choice and that it’s ok to choose you.
It requires leadership – self leadership.
When you can lead yourself effectively and stand strong in knowing who you are and that you matter, you can help empower others to see the same in themselves.
The world doesn’t need more managers and task nazi’s – it needs more inspiring leaders, those that role model good leadership and help others do the same.
Don’t be a wait and see leader of your life – take action today.
